Pins and Needles $12.78 Their fourth album, Pins and Needles finds the Birthday Massacre evolving their sound, pushing their synth rock into bigger and more atmospheric directions with the help of some slick production and a more refined approach to songwriting. While the album still has the dark, gothic tone the band is known for, the songs here also have an industrial vibe to them. With production by Skinny Puppy producer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie, it’s clear where Pins and Needles’ newfound heaviness comes from. Fortunately for the Birthday Massacre, this new sound works for them. The thick, crunchy guitar work and spacy synthesizers blend together well, giving the songs a more spacious feeling and creating some wide open spaces for singer Chibi’s vocals to explore. Pitchfork & Lost Needles $12.78 Pitchfork & Lost Needles includes Clutch’s debut 7″ in its four-song entirety and augments that with unreleased tracks and demo versions. As this set proves, the veteran quartet began as a band crouched between the Melvins, a viscous form of hardcore (think a slower, more economic Sick of It All), and the literate but still loud post-punk of Jawbox. “Wicker” is in blistering half-time, its layers of needling guitars and Neil Fallon’s yawping proclamations (“Pacemaker! LIFE TAKER!”) skinned to their barest, most powerful essence. “Arcadia” is three minutes of stocky thud, the sort of thing flannel-shirted bullies would blast from crappy boom boxes in the early ’90s. The unreleased tracks are equally strong, from the low-slung grind of the perfectly named “Nero’s Fiddle” to the relatively upbeat “Passive Restraints,” a song tailor-made for pissing off parents or turfing lawns. “What Would a Wookie Do?” and “Bottoms Up, Socrates” date from the Robot Hive: Exodus sessions. As such they’re more nuanced than Clutch’s early work, but not by much. Fallon’s vocals and lyrics take a higher position in the mix and an additional organ adds depth. But “Socrates” still finds a way to turn its breezy introduction into a righteous chorus anthem. The demos of “Bacchanal” and “Milk of Human Kindness” — both songs dating from Transnational Speedway League — aren’t too different from their final versions besides being a bit more satisfyingly raw. Pitchfork & Lost Needles is a great pickup for both Clutch diehards and the uninitiated, since the populations of both groups are so large. Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells $11.98 Rock*A*Teens frontman Chris Lopez returns with Tenement Halls, and their first album is both a departure from and a continuation of the earlier group’s sound. The Rock*A*Teens were distinguished by the almost impossible amount of reverb they drenched their songs with, the gripping quality of Lopez’s songs, and his keening wail of a vocal. On Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells, Lopez (who plays all the instruments except for drums on a couple of songs and produced as well) peels back the reverb to human levels and adds lots of organ and piano, percussion, and acoustic guitar to brighten the room and add texture. That’s not to say he has forsaken reverb; there is still more than enough here to fulfill anyone’s minimum reverb requirements. Lopez also lightens things by toning down his vocals somewhat — by howling less and using dynamics more he makes the songs easier to swallow the first time around. But that’s not to say he remotely sounds under control most of the time; he still careens and swoops through the songs like Barry Sanders running through a secondary. As for the songs, they are perhaps his strongest batch to date. They revolve around the usual Southern gothic themes of mental instability, loneliness, desolation, and infidelity, yet are almost all delivered with a disarming brightness and cheer that keep the gloom from settling in. You may never hear a peppier song about the ins and outs of keeping sane friends on the beam than “Charlemagne,” or a bouncier ditty about broken-down desperation than “Starless Night.” The first time through the record you might not even notice how melancholy the words are; they work as an undercurrent that brings you back to the album again to dig deeper into the muck. Songs like “When the Swifts Come Home” and “Up & Over Thee Turnstiles” are the work of an artist in full control of his abilities and — more importantly — are about as good as indie rock gets. The Rock*A*Teens never displayed the depth and soul on offer here. Tenement Halls is an altogether more listenable and intellectually and emotionally satisfying experience, and Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells is the 2005 American indie rock equivalent of the kind of records the Kinks were making in the Village Green era: parochial, intimate, painfully literate, and pretty close to brilliant. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Shannon Wright – Wurlitzer; Ballard Lesemann – Drums; Will Fritesi – Drums |

Between the Needles and Nightfall $11.98 Marco Benevento’s first two studio recordings, Invisible Baby and Me Not Me, took an approach that smashed all of his musical interests together in a delightful, loopy, sometimes slightly insane musical mess of jazz, rock, funk, classical, cartoon, and jam band music. Backed by a rhythm section (usually bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Andrew Barr), he played an array of vintage keyboards (including a baby grand piano with guitar pickups and an amplifier) and “circuit bent toys.” His music on those records is unclassifiable, wonderfully humorous, and full of surprises, because it shifts not only genres but textures, dynamics, and arrangements very quickly; often spastically, and he makes it all sound easy.Between the Needles and Nightfall is a change-up in his approach. With Mathis and Barr, Benevento still uses his array of toys, and he still employs many genres of music, but he’s consciously decided to make this batch of tunes more structural and formal. The musical collision course he’s previously charted has been smoothed into grooves, easily identifiable melodies, and actual loops — in other words, songs. Each tune here, once its theme is established, is identifiable all the way through to its end. There isn’t a lack of ideas here, far from it; if anything there is a compositional framework that is as original as his more abstract work. What is here is a very deliberate attempt at creating a record that can be easily digested — even ignored, borrowing an idea (and interpreting it maximally rather than ambiently) from Brian Eno — as it plays. The title track uses a spare set of chords and accents Mathis’ electric bass as much as it does a lilting, nostalgic melody that gradually develops into an anthemic brand of hummable melancholy with martial drumming from Barr. “It Came from You” employs percussion loops, programs, and layers of keyboards that move through drum‘n’bass and eventually morph into a surreal cartoon music whose melody is unforgettable once encountered, even though there are sly solos on piano and organ inside it. “You Know I’m No Good” is like the Ramsey Lewis Trio grooving on a montuno in a Sergio Leone western before it transforms into impure soul-jazz, all the while keeping the groove in the pocket with enough distorted sound effects to shove it into the 21st century. Initial listens might seem underwhelming, but that’s deceptive: there is much sleight of hand going on here that repeated once reveal numerous surfaces grafted onto and inside one another. Between the Needles and Nightfall is an excellent introduction to Benevento for new listeners.
